VANFOSSEN/SPEAKMAN
I just received death certificates from the Ohio Historical Society for Henery and Catharine VanFossen, who are buried in the Zion Church Cemetery. Henery is the son of John and Emily (Knight) VanFossen, both born in Ohio. Henery died on 2-22-1925. On the death certificate, it says that he was 78 years old which would conflict with the birthdate of 1849 on his tombstone. However, it does say that he was buried in Zion Cemetery and Catharine is his wife. Catharine VanFossen was the daughter of James Speakman and Sarah Seymour. James was born in Hocking County, while Sarah was born in Ross County. Catharine died on 1-5-1935. Her DOB is 4-20-1859. Let me know if you have any leads as I am starting all over from this point. I thought I had it figured out!!! Laura Corcoran

Hocking County emigrees to Central Michigan
Hi Jim. Between approximately 1840 and 1890, several "colored" African American families migrated from Hocking County to central Michigan, where they homesteaded farms. I'm wondering how these families happened to be in Hocking County. Was Hocking County a major depot of the "Underground Railroad" for runaway slaves? My maternal great grandparents were Solomon Harding and his wife Jennie Smith Harding. Next year, God willing, I plan to return to School Section Lake in Isabella County, Michigan where a reunion of the descendants of the Old Settlers from Hocking County is held on the third Saturday of August each year. Looking for Abraham COMER, Charles COMER, William Allen COMER, and Sophia ROUSH
My grandfather, William Allen Comer, was born in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio in 1845. His father, Charles, was born there also in 1817 and died shortly before my grandfather was born in a milling accident. I don't know who his first wife was and that poss. was Charles's mother. Abraham's second wife was Eve Harsh(that info is documented in a book about Harsh's) They had only one child(Matilda, I think).William Allen's mother was Sophia Roush and they lived with Abraham and Eve after Charles died. Sophia died in 1850 or 1851. Wm. lived with Abraham and Eve until he enlisted in the Union Army. After the civil war ended, he married Nancy Schoff and eventually migrated west. My main purpose of this email is to try to find info. about Abraham. He poss. was born in Ohio also and/or was born in Vermont or his parents were. Any info that you can send me would be wonderful. I know that Hocking county was formed in 1817. Thank you, Diane Comer Heare (I also don't have any info about Sophia Roush's parents, etc.)

I have checked the cemeteries in the area where he was supposed to have lived but no luck. He was in the Civil War in the 6th Independent Sharpshooters unit so he should have had a GAR marker. FELLOW, FELLOWS, FELLER, ROBENAULT, ROBENOLT
"According to the 1820 Federal Census for Fairfield Co., PETER FELLOW and PETER FELLOW JR. were living in RUSH TOWNSHIP. PETER JR. has listed two male children equal to the ages of MOSES FELLOWS [born 1813-14] and JOSEPH FELLOWS [born 1811-12]. But, the 1830 Census has only one name listed as PETER FELLER. [notes from USGENWEB] Rushcreek Township was established in 1803. It has had many changes over the years of its size, it originally contained 48 sections. In 1840, it was divided into 2 townships, the northern half retained the Rushcreek name and the southern half was called Auburn Township. In 1852, Auburn was divided in half and the northern part was annexed to Rushcreek Township and the southern part to MARION TOWNSHIP of HOCKING COUNTY, OH. The first survey of Rushcreek Township was made by Elenathan Schofield in 1799. In legal terms this township is known as Township 16, Range 17. Some early settlers of this township were . . . . Henry Sellers. . . [I am wondering if this person is named "Fellers" instead?] By 1840, JOSEPH and MOSES had moved to McHenry Co., IL,and are listed in the Federal Census there. The 1850 Federal Census has the families of JOSEPH and MOSES FELLOWS as being from PA. Please let me know if you are researching this family. MOSES married ELIZABETH ROBENAULT/ROBENOLT, daughter of PETER and MARGARET [CRAMER] ROBENAULT, in Fairfield Co., OH, about 1835-36. Their son, HIRAM was born to MOSES and ELIZABETH about 1836. Before the Fall of 1839, PETER and MARGARET ROBENAULT and family, JOSEPH FELLOWS, and MOSES,ELIZABETH, and HIRAM FELLOWS moved to McHenry, IL. JOSEPH FELLOWS married CHRISTINA ROBENAULT, ELIZABETH'S sister in 1839. I need to know more about the PETER and PETER FELLOW JR. families of RUSH TOWNSHIP. There are many FELLER/FELLOW/FELLOWS surnames listed for Fairfield County. I am needing help to sort out the family groups. Please contact me if you know of any one who is researching this family. Thanks and Blessings: Carol Anderson

Oakes-Davidson in Hocking County
I am tracing a family line back into Ohio, I believe. My mother's grandmother, Bessie Blanche Davidson, died of breast cancer when my mother was five. Bessie had moved away from her family in the Mount Pleasant, Iowa, area after she married. As a result of this, our knowledge of her family is limited. I know that Bessies father's name was Samuel and that he was married to with maiden name of Oakes (we think). I have an old picture of Samuel and his wife taken in Mount Pleasant. I have included what limited knowledge I have for Samuel, his wife, his kids, and their info at the bottom of this email. I am sorry if this appears somewhat desperate, but that is actually an accurate assessment -- we can't get past Bessie's parents as we trace this leg. If Bessie hadn't died young, we would have been much more strongly connected to our heritage. I am in hopes that either you may have some county resources you could look up or have some pertinent info. I would be glad to share what I might have. Charles S. S. Taylor and Martha M. Reddick
I have a copy of a marriage document from the Hocking County records for a marriage of Charles S. S. Taylor and Martha M. Reddick. Marriage was performed on 19 April 1866. On this document the bride's name is listed also as Martha M. Murdock, by the Probate Judge, O. Case. The name is listed as Martha M. Reddick by H. K. Wright, who solemnized the marriage on 19 April 1866. I also have a copy of a page from a family Bible which lists the brides name as Martha M. Reddick. Bible also lists her birthdate as 19 Nov 1845. Did the probate judge make an error, or was Martha Reddick possibly married to a Murdock before she married Charles Taylor? I could use some help from someone to check the marriage records for a marriage of Martha Reddick to a Murdock. John A. McCall

Dolly Brown/Sarah Jane Brown
My great grandfather William Ansel George married a Dolly Brown in Vinton County in 1898. Their oldest daughter Ethel George was born in 1899. Her obituary years later referred to her mother as Sarah Jane Brown. Subsequent census records indicate Sarah/Dolly was born in 1877. Her youngest child Ocie was born in 1911, and this cost Sarah her life. There is one Sarah Brown in Jackson Twp, Vinton County in 1880 census in the home of Daniel E. Brown on the same page as William's family headed by father Isaac George. That census would suggest that that Sarah was born in 1876. Her mother Sarah M. Brown had died in 1879. Another Sarah Brown was in Falls Twp, Hocking County in 1880 census, apparently born in 1877 in family of Thomas J and Mary A. Brown. As adults, William Ansel and Sarah Brown George lived in Starr Twp, Hocking County. Which, if either Sarah Brown is my great grandmother? thanks, Mike Beckley
Funks in Falls Twp
Tracing my family tree back to my 2nd great grandmother Mary Funk George, I hit a brickwall. She married Isaac George in 1866, after his first wife Catherine Rose died earlier in the decade. I found Mary in 1850 and 1860 censuses in household of John Rose and Sarah Funk Rose. I assume Sarah is Mary's oldest sister and that John is somehow related to Isaac's first wife. Looking for Funks in Falls Twp, I find David, Abraham and Joseph in 1840 census. Joseph is gone by 1850(hence Mary in sis's household). That 1840 census finds a mother and wife missing from Joseph's household. Mary was born in 1839. So, if this is Mary's family then her mother died in 1839 or 1840. I believe that Mary's mother's name is Sarah Miller(I had found Joseph 10 years younger in 1830 census in Muskingham County and an 1822 marriage record there for a Joseph Funk and Sarah Miller. Apparently Joseph died sometime between 1840 and 1850. Where might someone residing in Falls Twp at this time be buried? Which cemeteries were active at this time? thanks, Mike Beckley
